Opera Hits 150m Active Users Across Africa as Opera News Hub rakes in 10 Thousand Articles Daily, New Report Says

The Opera News Hub which was launched in Nigeria about a year ago now boasts of about 10 thousand articles  published on a daily basis across Africa while Opera News launched under the Africa First strategy two years ago is now the leading news and content app in Africa with 25 million active users as of Q3-2020.

These and more are the details contained in the group’s Press statement sighted by Exclusive Africa.

According to the press statement, Olist, which is the group’s classifieds business ads directory which was launched in Nigeria in August 2019 is now the second biggest classifieds business in the country with approximately 6 million monthly active users.

The group reports that its user base reached 150 million in Q3-2020.

In Q3-2020, the Opera user base in Africa showed a strong 18% growth of YOY across all its products, reaching a combined user base of 150 million monthly active users.

The report states that there was a significant growth in its apps like Opera Mini and Opera News, and is thus confident that this growth will continue next year.

On the global scene, the group reports that more than 380 million people around the world chose from an array of the Opera brand’s products every month with 150 million based in Africa.

This certainly shows that a good chunk of its subscriber base is in Africa, a strong testament to why the focus is largely on Africa.

The brand also has certainly invested considerably to make its products easily accessible.

One of such investments is its provision of free browsing data across Africa.

The group reports that it formed partnerships with leading telcos across Sub-Saharan Africa to provide people with free browsing in the Opera Mini browser. In Q1 this year, it partnered with MTN and Airtel in Nigeria, followed by MTN Zambia.

In the second quarter it further expanded its partnerships with the telcos in Ghana; MTN, AirtelTigo and Vodafone. In August, it replicated the successes also gained with Safaricom in Kenya – among the leading telcos on the continent, soon followed by Airtel Kenya.

More recently, it announced partnership with MTN South Africa.

Through these ten partnerships, Opera has provided nearly 40 million people with up to 1.5 GB of free browsing every month across five African countries.

These details no doubt goes to show why Africa and Nigeria specifically is a destination of choice for any big budget business looking to invest. The numbers are certainly there.
