- Mauritius and South Africa lead the pack of most innovative countries in Africa

African countries have continued to dwarf global projections, especially in the area of innovation and technological integration. The continent has shown great commitment to climbing up the revered global tech ladder to catch up with its counterparts to drive an economy anchored on innovation.
According to recent statistics revealed in the 15th edition of the Global Innovation Index, African countries recorded huge improvements in innovation in 2022.
Africa’s Top 5 Most Innovative Countries
The Global Innovation Index refers to a set of data geared at providing yearly data that rank countries based on their level of innovation. The report is released by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), and the 2022 data ranks Mauritius, South Africa, Morocco, Tunisia, and Botswana as the top 5 most innovative countries in the continent. Kenya, which made the top 5 list in 2021, was edged out by Botswana.
As shown in the report, Mauritius, South Africa, and Morocco are the African countries with the most significant improvements as they have moved remarkably towards the more developed countries like Switzerland, the United States, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and the Netherlands – which currently occupied the top 5 spots globally.
African countries in the lower-middle income bracket also performed beyond expectation, in what the report referred to as “exceeding expectations.” Morocco, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Tunisia, and Kenya (despite dropping off the top 5 slots in Africa) performed remarkably.
Also, Rwanda, Madagascar, Burundi, and Mozambique “outperformed on innovation relative to their development” in the lower-income category. Madagascar is currently the country with the fastest internet on the African continent.
In the upper middle-income category, South Africa performed above global projections and expectations, while Mauritius was chalked to have performed within the expectations of experts. Other African countries that also lived up to their expectations as a result of visible improvements in other sectors include Ghana and Senegal.
However, Africa’s most populous black nation, Nigeria – which is also on record as the biggest economy in Africa, performed below expectations according to the 2022 Global Innovation Index data released by WIPO. Another country that performed below expectations is Botswana, despite making it to the top 5 in Africa.
Experts say the country is punching below its weight in the area of technological innovation, considering its level of development and structure that can push the country to the next level in innovation and information technology.
What Contributed to Enhanced Innovation in Africa in 2022?
One significant move across Africa that contributed significantly to improved innovation figures in the continent is the swift adoption of the 5G networks in 2022. Also, many African countries invested in infrastructure that enabled a conducive environment for carrying out metaverse testing.
Also, the continent currently boasts a high population of young tech enthusiasts who continue to push the continent’s innovation drive beyond expectations.
In 2022, reports revealed that Africa recorded the largest shipment of smartphones than any other continent in the world. There were also a higher number of electric vehicles and motorcycles shipped into the continent than has ever been recorded.
In addition, the launch of a regional cybersecurity monitoring center in the continent, coupled with huge investments by tech companies in the continent to protect the collective ecospace from cyber attacks, played an important role.
