The University of Lagos has developed a zero emission, electric and eco-friendly vehicle which it is currently test running.
The University’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor, (Academics and Reaserch), Oluwole Familoni revealed the giant stride to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Lagos
According to the DVC, the production of the vehicle is an invaluable addition to the university’s efforts at contributing to the prevention of the release of toxic emissions to the environment.
The vehicle was developed by a team of Mechanical Engineering students of the University. When mass produced, the vehicle will help reduce Nigeria’s carbon emission. It will also go a long way in the global effort towards reducing carbon emission which is contributing to the depleting of the ozone layer, a vital component shielding the world from harmful rays of the sun.
The vehicle has been code named UNILAG ZEV as an indegenous innovation of the institution.
According to Mr Familoni, UNILAG ZEV is a 63 per cent hardware and 100 per cent software home-made (Akoka content) mechatronics automobile device.
The University’s Vice-Chancellor, Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, had earlier inaugurated the UNILAG Zero Emission Vehicle team in 2018. The ZEV comes three years after fellow institution the University of Nigeria unveiled a five-seater electric car comprised of 80% locally-sourced materials and capable of a 30-kilometer range when fully charged.
