On May 12, 2021, the University announced on its website, the appointment of Nigerian Professor, Ibrahim Abubakar as its new Dean of the UCL Faculty of Population Health Sciences with effect from August 1, 2021.

The University described Prof.  Ibrahim Abubakar as a word-leading scholar in the field of infectious disease epidemiology.

The University College, London is one of the top rated universities in the UK known for its research. It was rated the top university in the UK for its research strength in the recent Research Excellence Framework, ranks 10th in the 2021 QS World University Rankings and was the first university in England to welcome students of any religion and women to university education.

According to the University, to date there have been 30 Nobel Prize laureates among UCL’s alumni and current and former staff.

Professor Abubakar joined UCL in 2012 as he was jointly appointed as Professor of Infectious Disease Epidemiology between the MRC Clinical Trials Unit and the Institute of Epidemiology of the University.

According to the University, the Professor in 2016 was appointed as Director of the Institute for Global Health and has also served as Vice-Dean International and External Engagement for the faculty.

Prior to his appointment at UCL, he led England’s public health tuberculous control strategy.

Professor Abubakar graduated from the Ahmadu Bello University where he studied medicine and then went on to specialise in public health and graduated with an MSc from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, a DPH from the University of Cambridge as well as a PhD from the University of East Anglia. He later worked as a Professor in Health Protection at the Norwich Medical School.

He is a Fellow of the Faculty of Public Health and the Royal College of Physicians and is credited as being instrumental in the development of UK’s Covid-19 vaccine. President Buhari recently congratulated him on his appointment.
