LionheartTheMovie: Nigerians’ Take On Oscar Disqualification

Its no longer news that Genevieve, one of Nigeria’s prominent actress turned producer had her Netflix original production was rejected by the Oscar committee from the best international movie category for “having too much dialogue in English.”

What is news however is the reactions from Nigerians.
Not one to shy away from public solidarity in the face of perceived external injustice being meted on their own, Nigerians continue to react to the disqualification of the movie which has some segments in the local Igbo language but interestingly is filmed in English language, which is the country’s official language.
The organizers rule holds stipulates that to qualify for the category, a film must be “predominantly non-English”.
Apparently almost everyone on twitter is sympathetic to her cause which a number of Nigerians going philosophical on the rejection. See reactions monitored by Exclusive Africa below:
